~ Heart B Ranch ~
Heart B Ranch lies on 36 acres in a beautiful valley in Emmett, Idaho. We are in the southwest area of Idaho about 30 miles northwest of Boise. We are often asked how we got started with mules so here's a short version. Around 1980 two things took place that changed Tom's thinking and direction. First he aquired a 4 yr. old john mule who had been running out, untouched except to be castrated (you get the picture) he had to be cowboyed and run into a stock trailer. Tom spent many days at the round pen trying to get into this mules mind and many nights were spent laying awake trying to figure out the best way to approach him. At the same time Tom was fed up with trying to haul and leave what was left of his race mares to be bred. So fascinated with this mule "Rosebud" he went to see an old friend in the valley for whom he had broke a hinney for, Jack Olsen. Jack had a couple of jacks and a bunch of mules out of appaloosa mares. Tom bought one of the young mules, a pretty black weanling he called Joe. Then he went back and bought a jack that Jack had gotten from California. This jack was like his wild mule Rosebud, not broke to lead, hard to handle and pretty much out of control. Tom bred his mares to his new jack and well, like they say the rest is history. We met and married in 1982 but it took a few years before I accidentally ran into a mule I felt comfortable enough with to become my mount, "Judy" was her name and it was love at first sight. We usually keep around 30 head of horses, mules and donkeys. Our broodmares consist of Quarter Horses, Paints and Thoroughbred. We also have a few Mammoth Jennets and raise some Mammoth Jackstock, so, if you're looking for that next jack be sure to check with us to see what we have. We select our mares for their breeding, conformation, and disposition....they must have a nice quiet, gentle mind to fit in our program. We won't tolerate a problem mare. We try to show our mules and donkeys atleast a few times during the year. When we aren't showing you can usually find us in the mountains at some gorgeous high moutain lake trout fishing....If you're ever in the area....stop by and we'll talk "mules".
